Delta Academy program was implemented by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to assist young African American girls ages 11-14, who are interested in developing their leadership skills. The academy focuses on the areas of math, science, technology, health, etiquette, non-traditional careers, mentoring, and reading skills. The members of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter and Nu Epsilon City Wide Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta meet with the Delta Academy participants one to two times per month, participating in various activities for a three hour span. Currently, Delta Academy has approximately 20 participants from all over the Metro area.
Delta Academy II: Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) builds upon the premise on which Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow was created. Delta GEMS is a natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of our successful program implementation. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks and development of a ‘can do’ attitude in high school girls ages 14-18 (grades 9th – 12th). Our goals for Delta GEMS are:
• To reinforce in our high school girls the desire to excel academically.
• To provide tools that empower our girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success.
• To assist our high schools girls in goal setting and planning for their futures – high school and beyond; and
• To create compassionate, caring and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service-learning and community service opportunities.
